The Heart Behind Helen's Ceramic Studio

For generations of Cuyahoga Falls residents, the name Helen's Ceramic Studio brings back fond memories of creativity, friendship, and time spent around a table with a paintbrush in hand. Behind those memories were Elmer L. Baughman (1923–1998) and his wife, Helen Baughman (1924-1996), whose dedication to the ceramic arts left a lasting mark on not only their family, but the community.

 

Beginning in the 1960s, Elmer and Helen owned and operated Helen's Ceramic Studio in Cuyahoga Falls, formerly known as "Northampton", where they welcomed thousands of customers through their doors over the next several decades. Long before the popularity of today's paint-your-own pottery studios, Helen's studio became a place where families, friends, neighbors, and children gathered to create keepsakes that still decorate homes today.

 

While Helen was the creative heart of the studio, Elmer was her steadfast partner behind the scenes. Together, they built more than a successful small business—they created a welcoming environment where everyone felt like family. Whether someone was painting their very first ceramic piece or had been visiting for years, Elmer and Helen made every customer feel at home.

 

Helen continued sharing her love of ceramics until her passing in 1996. Just two years later, Elmer passed away in 1998, but the memories they created have continued to live on through the countless pieces of pottery displayed in homes throughout Northeast Ohio and through the stories still shared by former customers today.

 

Continuing the Tradition

Today, the legacy of Helen's Ceramic Studio lives on through Helen's Ceramic & Art Studio, located once again in Cuyahoga Falls and proudly owned and operated by Helen's granddaughter, Jaime Prenatt.

 

Inspired by the wonderful memories of growing up in her grandparents' studio, Jaime opened a studio bearing her grandmother's name with the hope of introducing a new generation to the joy of creating together. While today's studio offers a fresh, modern experience, its mission remains rooted in the same values that Elmer and Helen demonstrated decades ago:

Every brushstroke, every laugh shared around a painting table, and every finished ceramic piece serves as a reminder that the legacy Elmer and Helen began more than half a century ago continues to inspire others.
